#Roommates, do you remember the story about a young woman who encouraged her boyfriend’s suicide in dozens of text messages? Well today she’s officially been sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail and 5 years of probation for involuntary manslaughter. According to TIME, Michelle Carter who was convicted back in June, consistently tried to convince her suicidal boyfriend Conrad Roy III to kill himself.
A Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz sentenced her to 2 ½ years but said she’d have to only serve 15 months of that. Carter’s lawyer asked the judge to spare her jail time being that she was battling her own “mental health issues” such as depression, bulimia and anorexia during the time she urged her then boyfriend to kill himself.
Carter and Roy met back in 2012 while they were both on vacation with their families. After that, they only met in person a few times, their relationship consisted mainly of texting. Roy’s family told the court they are devastated by their son’s passing.
