POLICE in Chicago are hunting an Oxford University bursar who has gone on the run after a grisly murder.
Fugitive Brit Andrew Warren is accused of stabbing a hair stylist to death. Here is what we know…
Who is Andrew Warren?
Andrew Warren, known as Andy, is a 56-year-old accounts worker at Oxford University’s Somerville College.
The college said he is a senior treasury assistant in charge of the payroll and pensions.
He went missing from the home he shared with his sister in Faringdon, Oxon, on July 24 and was reported missing to cops the next day.
It is believed he flew to the US without telling anyone where he was going.
On July 27 he was seen on CCTV leaving a Chicago apartment building with Northwestern University academic Wyndham Lathem, 42.
It is not known how they knew each other. Police said it was the first time Warren had been to the US.
Warren claimed he had a passion for bondage and torture on his online dating profile.
He said he had “no limits” and wanted to find someone dominant on gay dating app Grindr.
Screenshots of his profile, seen by The Sun, show he was registered under the names “Anything Goes”, “No Limits” and “GoneForever2015”.
Warren’s Facebook profile says he is from Swindon and has previously worked as a bus driver and cashier for Stagecoach.
Why is Andrew Warren wanted for murder?
Police in Chicago say they found a “gruesome scene” in Lathem’s tenth-floor apartment where hairdresser Trenton Cornell-Duranleau, 26, had been stabbed and slashed to death.
The victim is believed to have been staying there with Lathem, an associate professor of microbiology at Chicago’s prestigious Northwestern University specialising in research on the bubonic plague.
Neighbours were told police were investigating “a variety of motives including a possible domestic incident”, according to the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper.
A judge issued an arrest warrant for Warren and Lathem on suspicion of murder.
Cops described the pair as “armed and dangerous” and said the net was closing in as the situation changed by “the hour”.
Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said: “We know where they might be, and we have more information coming in.”
What has Oxford University said?
Warren’s employers at Oxford University have urged the fugitive to hand himself into police.
A spokesman said the University has been in contact with officers in the UK and is prepared to assist the US investigation.
He said: “Andrew Warren’s colleagues at Somerville College have now all been informed and are shocked to learn of the case.
“Whatever the circumstances, we would urge him to contact the US authorities as soon as possible, in the best interests of everyone concerned.”
