#LouisVuitton just gave being “fashion-forward” a whole new meaning! Ghanaian-American designer #VirgilAbloh, who is also creative director to #KanyeWest and founder of his own fashion enterprise “OFF-WHITE”, has been named as the new menswear designer for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world’s largest luxury group in the world! This fantastic announcement comes after his predecessor Kim Jones stepped down in January.
“I feel elated,” Abloh tells @NYTimes. “This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.”
Michael Burke, CEO and chairman of Louis Vuitton praised Abloh for his creativity having met him back in 2006 as an intern at #Fendi alongside Kanye West.
“Having followed with great interest Virgil’s ascent since he worked with me at Fendi in 2006, I am thrilled to see how his innate creativity and disruptive approach have made him so relevant, not just in the world of fashion but in popular culture today,” Burke said in a statement. “His sensibility towards luxury and savoir-faire will be instrumental in taking Louis Vuitton menswear into the future.”
Abloh’s first show will take place in June during men’s fashion week in Paris.
