This is the heart-stopping moment the London Bridge terrorists lunged to stab a drinker before being shot dead by armed police in a hail of 50 bullets.

Terrifying CCTV shows the three fanatics attacking a man who was walking by the entrance of Borough Market opposite the Wheatsheaf pub as a police car arrived with its sirens blaring.

Three officers with guns poured out and mowed down the attackers, as the victim miraculously staggered to his feet and ran away.

The footage begins with the three terrorists, Khuram Butt, Yousef Zaghba and Rachid Redouane, walking calmly towards the entrance of The Wheatsheaf pub.

They had already murdered eight people and injured dozens after crashing their car on London Bridge and leaping out brandishing knives.

The three terrorists try to enter The Wheatsheaf but find the doors are barred by staff, who are sheltering dozens of drinkers.

At this moment the terrorists spot a man in a dark shirt and white trousers running along the road.

The first attacker, thought to be Youssef Zaghba, who has a striped black and white shirt, springs over and plunges a foot-long knife into the victim’s torso.

The victim falls to the ground as the second attacker, Khuram Butt, who can be identified by his Arsenal shirt, joins in the frenzied attack.

Rachid Redouane, who has a dark hoodie, also leaps on the victim and all three stab him as a police squad car speeds towards them with its sirens blaring.

Even as the officers arrive brave members of the public can be seen throwing chairs at the terrorists in an effort to distract them. This corresponds with reports from witnesses.

At least three policemen pour out of the car while it is still moving, with two leaving by the right-hand door and another from the left.

The car continues edging forward as one officer runs towards Butt, who tries to lunge at him with his knife before being shot down. The other two officers target Zaghba and Redouane.

Redouane is shot, and falls onto the floor alongside one of the other officers, who gets back onto his feet before kicking the terrorist to ensure he is dead.

At this point the victim gets to his feet and runs away, a total of 12 seconds after being first attacked by Zaghba.

It is not clear whether the victim survived the assault.

A later photo, taken around the corner at The Globe pub, showed a bloodied man in similar clothes receiving medical treatment. This person has not been identified.

Five seconds after the victim runs away, another squad car arrives with three more officers.

They are quickly joined by another two, who together fired 50 rounds of bullets to kill the terrorists. All three were neutralised six seconds after the armed police arrived.

The disturbing scenes came at the end of eight minutes of chaos that killed eight and injured nearly 50.

The attack began as terrorists Khuram Butt, Yousef Zaghba and Rachid Redouane mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge and crashed their van.

They then leapt out and began attacking drinkers in pubs and bars around the ancient food market in Southwark.

The latest CCTV footage emerged as the death toll from the attack reached eight, following the discovery of a body near Limehouse, downstream from London Bridge.

Xavier Thomas, 45, is thought to have been knocked into the water when he was struck by the van driven by the fanatics on Saturday night.

Scotland Yard yesterday announced that its marine unit had recovered a body near Limehouse, which is four miles downstream of London Bridge, at 7.44pm on Tuesday.

Although formal identification has yet to take place, the body is understood to be that of Mr Thomas.

He was last seen walking southbound across the bridge with his girlfriend Christine Delcros during a weekend visit to London from France.

Miss Delcros was struck by the van and continues to be treated for serious injuries in hospital. She is understood to be in a stable condition.

Police initially said that the terrorists had claimed seven victims. But when Mr Thomas was reported missing by family members, officers started searching the Thames for him.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: ‘Detectives were appealing for information about Xavier Thomas, 45, a French national who had not been seen since the night of the terrorist attack on London Bridge.

It comes as police and security forces continue to face questions about whether opportunities to prevent the atrocity were missed.

MailOnline can reveal there were several opportunities to stop more than one of the terrorists getting into Britain in the first place – but the authorities failed to intervene.

Mastermind Khuram Butt was deemed a ‘low priority’ despite an aborted attempt to wage holy war in Syria, links to several notorious extremists and an appearance on national TV where he unfurled an ISIS-style flag in public.

Friends and worried parents say they reported him to the anti-terror hotline at least three times for extremist behaviour and trying to radicalise children.

The youngest attacker Youssef Zaghba, 22, was waved through at Stansted Airport in January despite Italian police flagging him as a potential terrorist on a Europe-wide warning system designed to alert passport control.

His own mother even asked police in his native Italy to keep him in custody after he tried to fly to Syria and told officers: ‘I’m going to be a terrorist’.

And failed asylum seeker Rachid Redouane, 30, was not deported after ten years in the UK despite being caught with a fake passport and living illegally under a false name.

He then married a British woman in Ireland and used it as a ‘backdoor’ to return to the UK and carry out the devastating attack on Saturday, killing eight and maiming 48 by ramming crowds with a rented van and slashing people with knives.

Since Saturday night’s attack, police and security services have faced repeated questions about whether they could have foiled the atrocity.
