Two Chicago police officers were seriously injured after their patrol SUV crashed into construction equipment and fell into a hole early Thursday on the South Side.

The officers, 25 and 33, were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition after crews extricated them from the SUV, according to police and Chicago fire Cmdr. Walter Schroeder.

The 33-year-old officer injured his right forearm, police said. The 25-year-old officer hurt his forearm, leg and hip.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. at 1130 E. 83rd Street in the Avalon Park neighborhood, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.   

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, Schroeder said.
