Earlier this year, Wale released the single “Bad” featuring his artist & friend Tiara, but things became tense between the two after Tiara signed with Rico Love. Shortly afterward, Tiara was replaced on the remix of “Bad” with Rihanna, which overshadowed her version in the album tracklisting.

In an earlier interview with Hot 97, Wale said that Tiara met Rico through him and he felt betrayed when she went and signed with Rico, but Tiara tells a different story in an interview this week with Laura Stylez. She said she was never offered a deal from Wale to begin with.

She also explained how the two ended up releasing “Bad” together.

Peep the highlights:

On the Wale Situation

What happened with that particular situation was I wrote “Bad” on my guitar. I did a Trillville cover. That “Some Cut” song. I did an acoustic cover of it. I had to think of something catchy. A catchy hook to sing along with this, so I just freestyled the hook for “Bad.” My friend Kelson and I actually produced the song in his bedroom. We put it on YouTube and ten months later, Wale heard it and he was like, ‘I want to put my verses on it.’ My manager at the time was like, ‘Wale this is your next single.’ I think he listened to it and he put verses on it.

Technically, I was never signed to Wale. He never offered me a record deal until after the “Bad” record was released. Now, with Rico Love, I met Rico Love last summer before there was ever a “Bad” [with Wale]. Way before the Wale situation. Actually “Bad” was just my song then. I played it for Rico. I remember playing it for him when I went to meet him in the studio. He was like, ‘Yo, this is your first single. This song is dope as hell.’ And then I had been talking to him months after that. I think he offered me a record deal two weeks after that when I met him last summer. Right after I met him he offered me a record deal. This was last summer. Then six months went by and that’s when the Wale “Bad” came to be. I was already talking to Rico and feeling comfortable in that situation. I was never offered a record deal [with Wale]. I knew Wale for three years and I was never offered a record deal.

On People Calling Her Disloyal

I don’t think it was a loyalty situation. Let me say that I was appreciative of the fact that Wale did use my record. Obviously that was when everything popped off, so shout out to Wale. With Rico, I just felt like that was the most comfortable situation for me to be in. I’ve seen a lot of stuff about me being disloyal and I don’t think people really know the story. On my part, there was no disloyalty. I was never offered a record deal and I was never signed with Wale. We’re still cool.

It sounds as though Wale missed out on signing her because he wanted to show her what he could do for her first. He previously mentioned that he didn’t want to put paperwork in front of her too soon in fear of scaring her off.

Their situation met through [me]. I was recording with the situation she’s in now and they met. It’s just the game though. My thing is I don’t really believe in paperwork too soon cause I like to show and prove what I can do. And I ain’t want to scare nobody. Like yo ‘let’s make the music, let’s vibe.’ You live and learn so that’s why I’ll kick myself before I complain about somebody else.
