CBD: Just another faddish health trend soon to go the way of oil-pulling, or a legitimate saving grace to those suffering from pain and anxiety? It’s hard to say: Legions of people have been swearing by the curative effects of CBD, saying it does everything from easing depression to reducing acne to alleviating cancer symptoms. But one of the most touted benefits of CBD is its ability to help with anxiety.

In fact, Mashable surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. consumers via Google Surveys between Jan. 22 and Jan. 25, 2019 and found that around 33% of people would use CBD oil to help ease anxiety, while 35% would consider it for pain management.
But for those just getting aquainted with CBD oil, where do you even begin?
First, let’s start with some background. CBD has been steadily gaining steam for a few years, but this is just the beginning: In 2018, President Trump signed the farm bill into law, which finally removed industrial hemp from a list of federally controlled substances. Before that, CBD was subject to a mishmash of laws that changed from state to state. But now that (the hemp derived variety) is legal across the board, it’s open season for entrepreneurs looking to make it big in the CBD market. (CBD products derived from marijuana are still subject to state laws — go here to check the status of your state.)
CBD is available in tons of forms, from the fun (gummies and candies) to the wacky (bath bombs). But those seriously looking to take in the restorative effects of CBD should turn to oils. Generally sold in small bottles with droppers, oils are made by extracting CBD from the cannabis plant, then diluting it with something called a carrier oil, usually coconut or hemp seed oil. Generally, there are two ways to ingest the oil: By vaping, or by using the dropper to put it on food, drinks, or under your tongue. (Buyers beware: CBD oils for vaping and those meant to be taken sublingually are usually two different things. Make sure to carefully read the description of any oils you buy to find out how it’s meant to be consumed.)
There are lots of CBD oils out there, but some are calibrated specifically to ease anxiety. With Americans dramatically than they were just a few years ago, now might be a great time to try your hand at some CBD. It can be confusing to know where to start, but don’t worry, we’ve done the research for you, reading hundreds of reviews across trusted sites to determine which oils will set you straight.
Trustworthy, affordable, effective
Can make you drowsy, feel slightly high
If you’re looking to tame anxiety, CBDistillery does the job.
1. CBDistilleryIf you’re looking for anxiety relief, the full spectrum tinctures are your best bet here.
CBDistillery offers multiple potencies of THC-free CBD oil tincture, starting at 500 mgs $32, all the way up to 5000 mgs for $210. You can use the dropper to take it under your tongue, or add it to food and drink. (It’s flavorless, though does reportedly have a fairly potent hemp scent.) The company also offers full spectrum CBD tinctures, which differ slightly from oil in that they are liquid extracts of hemp combined with alcohol, vegetable glycerin, or oil. If you’re looking for anxiety relief, the full spectrum tinctures are your best bet, though they do contain small amounts of THC, and users who have taken large doses have reported feeling a little high. As nathanroot28 on reddit:
“I use CBDistillerey. Full spectrum oil is the way to go for anxiety but I do have to warn you that there IS and [SIC] effect you feel from it. It’s like a calm feel over your body that rids the anxiety and might make you a tiny bit drowsy in larger doses but that’s just how CBD is and it’s not anywhere near the same as smoking weed and getting high. My best method for killing my constant anxiety is 1-3 drops under the tongue of 500mg full spectrum 15ml tincture 3-4 times daily and I have to say it works wonders for me — and I was skeptical at first. Definitely give it a try cause tbh the effects of CBD like drowsiness or a slight high feel are nowhere near as bad as they will be smoking regular weed or taking prescription anxiety meds. I stand by my CBD oil.”
Lots and lots of positive reviews, good for anxiety and postpartum depression
NuLeaf is great all around—if you can afford it.
2. NuLeaf NaturalsThough on the pricier side, it’s totally organic and free from additives and preservatives.
Here’s a snippet of conversation on reddit where NuLeaf is discussed:
“I love nuleaf naturals. It works for my postpartum depression and anxiety.”
“nuleaf def superior imo if u can afford it, and it’s not even close.. green mountain offers the most bang for ur buck tho”
“Well I’ve been on it for a year now and I’ve tried about 6 others because of the price difference and I always go back to nuleaf. It seems to take less of nuleaf than any of the others even though the amount of cbd is the same.”
It’s true that NuLeaf is pretty hard on your wallet. The least expensive option is the 240mg bottle that retails for $38.50 and contains about 100 drops. The price tag ratchets up incrementally from there, topping out at 4850 mgs (2000 drops) for $439.
Also, reviewers often don’t love the taste, which has been described as “strong,” but that’s because NuLeaf oil doesn’t contain artificial flavors.
Koi’s oils are best when you place them under the tongue and give them a few seconds to absorb, so it’s lucky that they come in four tasty flavors: Orange, lemon-lime, spearmint, and natural. Bottles are available in five strengths—250 mgs for $39.99, 500 mgs for $59.99, and 1000 mgs for $99.99. If you want to mix and match, the 30mL variety pack lets you sample all four flavors. If you want something that packs an even bigger punch, there’s a 60 mL bottle (natural flavor) that comes in 1500 mgs for $149.99 or 3000 mgs for $249.99.
Some reviewers say Koi’s flavors are a bit sweet, but it’s a small price to pay, since they also say they work:
As e wrote on reddit:
“Koi Naturals 1000 is my favourite so far. 6 drops and my anxiety/back pain is gone. 12 drops and I feel happy.”
“I second Koi. I personally vape it as 1/5th Koi with 4/5th regular no-nicotine juice for all-day dosage, but I’ve also had it straight from the dropper and it’s been amazing.”
Great customer service, good pricing
Green Mountain has an extremely dedicated fanbase, and they’ve earned it.
Another way in which Green Mountain stands out is its excellent customer service, with multiple reviewers on reddit saying the company goes above and beyond to ensure that customers are happy. As for its effectiveness with treating anxiety, reviews are downright glowing:
According to :
“Green Mountain CBD has increased my quality of life exponentially. Could not recommend more. For the first time in 6 years my anxiety is not crippling and I am happy.”
Same goes for :
“Another thumbs-up for Green Mountain. Very reasonably priced oil, and quite tasty, too. Seeing this prompted me to reorder, in fact, so thanks for the reminder.”
“Props on the customer service and very good pricing. My order went just like you’d like, smooth, easy, and quick.”
Strong, eases social anxiety
Since it’s powerful, start in small doses
Endoca CBD oil doesn’t mess around.
5. Endoca Hemp OilShop two options: hemp oil drops and RAW hemp oil drops.
4 out of 5 stars
Endoca offers two different options—hemp oil drops and RAW hemp oil drops. Both are available in 300 mgs (both $31) or 1500 mgs (both $129). So what’s the difference?
According to Endoca, the hemp oil drops are made with the whole hemp plant containing both CBD and CBDa, which are extracted using CO2 without any chemicals. The raw hemp material then gets filtered and heated, which converts the CBDa into CBD, and keeps the most important active molecules in the plant intact.
CBD RAW hemp oil drops are extracted through the same process as hemp oil drops, but they aren’t heated. Therefore, the CBDa that doesn’t decarboxylate naturally is left intact. Like CBD, CBDa is also thought to have positive effects on other non-endocannabinoid receptors and enzymes, and offers — according to the Endoca site — the “fullest possible spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids from the original plant — all preserved as no heat has been applied.”
The company has also received positive reviews from users on reddit. Difficult Language wrote:
“Personally I would recommend Endoca. You can get three small samples of their blends to try them out (the regular, not the 6x). That’s what I started with and I’ve had great luck with since September (my social anxiety is severe too). Start low. With the Endoca sampler it’s about 4mg per .5 ml which is a reasonable place to start. See how you feel after a few days. If that works for you, stay at that level. If it’s not enough, step up slowly — like up to 5 or 6 mg a dose, or try a 4 mg dose twice a day if you feel good for most of the day but hit a slump at night. How long the bottle will last depends on how much you need at a time. I get a 2ml bottle and that lasts me about 2 months.”
