Onika Tanya Maraj (born December 8, 1984), better known by her stage name Nicki Minaj, is an American rapper and singer.  In August 2009, Minaj signed to Young Money Entertainment with distribution from Universal Motown. Her debut album is currently due to be released on November 23, 2010. She has also released three successful mixtapes.
Onika Maraj was born in Trinidad, and lived there for five years with her grandmother. At age 5, she moved to Queens, New York. She is of mixed Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian descent. According to Minaj, she grew-up in a home with an abusive father who drank alcohol, did drugs, and once tried to kill her mother by setting the house on fire. She has stated that life was difficult growing up, but that “music helped her through it”. She graduated from LaGuardia High School in 2003 in Manhattan where she studied singing and acting

Nicki Minaj began her career in 2004 singing background vocals and hooks for rappers in New York City. She was discovered on MySpace by Dirty Money CEO Fendi, who signed her to the label in 2004. After appearing on “The Carter Edition” of Young Money’s The Come Up DVD series, Minaj was contacted by Lil Wayne, which lead to her being dropped by Dirty Money. The two collaborated on a number of mixtape tracks. In April 2007, she released her first mixtape, Playtime Is Over, posing as a Barbie doll on the cover. The mixtape was well received, and Minaj collaborated heavily with Lil Wayne on the mixatape.
In 2008, Minaj released her second mixtape, Sucka Free. She also appeared in the July issue of XXL magazine, giving a brief overview of her life thus far. Later that year, she won the Female Artist of the Year award at the Underground Music Awards.
Nicki Minaj released Beam Me Up Scotty, another mixtape, in April of 2009. It received generally positive coverage on both BET and MTV. After its release, Minaj signed to her mentor Lil Wayne’s label, Young Money Entertainment in conjunction with Universal Motown Records. Minaj was featured on Young Money’s debut album, We Are Young Money, which was released on December 21, 2009. The album sold 142,000 records in its first week, reaching #9 on the Billboard 200, giving Minaj her first success on the chart. Her rapping was also featured on two of the album’s three singles. “BedRock”, which was released in November of 2009 as the album’s second single, reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and #1 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, giving Minaj chart success. The third single from the album, “Roger That”, was released in March of 2010 and reached #56 on the Hot 100, #15 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and #6 on the Hot Rap Songs chart, becoming a mild success.
