Eighteen women have graduated infantry basic training for the Army’s 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning, Georgia.

They are the Army’s first junior enlisted female infantrymen, after the Army lifted its ban on women serving in the infantry and armor branches.

In August 2015, two women became the first females to graduate from the Army’s prestigious Ranger School, also at Fort Benning.

Capt. Kristen Griest and then 1st Lt. Shaye Haver were two of the 19 women who qualified for Ranger School after starting the course. At the time, Ranger School was only open to men. It has since been to open to all soldiers who qualify to attend, male or female.
