It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt!” Last night on my TL, it was flooded with everyone speaking about “Planking”.

According to Wiki, Planking is defined as:

an activity, popular in various parts of the world, consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body, and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the game.[2] Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play.[2] The location should also be as public as possible, and as many people as possible should be involved

I’m not jumping on the bandwagon, just cause others are doing it.  I did some research on planking, and it revealed that slaves were chained and attached to “plank” beds. They were forced to lay face down with their arms by their side and their wrist chained to their waist. Some were even stacked on top of each other with no room to move. It may look fun to some people, but it is an insult to others. Although “planking” wasn’t the official terminology used by slave masters it is still seen as an insult to some African Americans. At the same token, it is seen as a core strengthening exercise to others. Clearly the term planking is used for a reason! It’s disrespectful to our ancestors to take such a devastating experience and turn it into a game.

  1. Can we say ridiculous?? Even if you dont bring in the racial history, its still silly as hell. I know the slaves were faced up, and not down. Im not going to lie some of these photos are to funny.

  2. This game was started by some bored Australians so I doubt that their 1st thought was of American/African slavery. Why must EVERYTHING be a racial issue. If it's not for you then that's cool, but I hardly see the connection with slavery. Slaves used to eat Watermelon because they were able to grow it themselves. If you see someone doing that now is that offensive. If they were laying on their backs would that make it any better? I bet then someone would say it looks like they are laying in slave ships. "Soul Food" was created by slaves, because they were given leftover scraps to eat, and they made what they could out of it. But I doubt people are in an uproar when a new soul food spot opens. Anything can be misconstrued to be offensive to someone and there are BIGGER problems in the world than some people who find enjoyment in a stupid game

  3. I agree, it is very dis-repectful and i dont see the purpose in making a game out of such a awful thing that our ancestors went thru! You can strenghten your core with other exercises and i wouldnt be caught dead during this! I see no purpose in it at all.. some one else's tragedy is no way a game to me!
