On Sunday authorities said that a suspect is in custody after eight people were killed in a shooting on Saturday. Among those that were killed was a sheriff deputy.
According to the New York Post, a spokesperson for the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the shootings took place at three separate homes in Lincoln County on Saturday night.
Two of the homes are located in Brookhaven and the third home is located in Bogue Chitto.
The suspect, Willie Cory Godbolt, has been charged with one count of capital murder and seven counts of first-degree murder.
Godbolt spoke with The Clarion-Ledger, as he sat handcuffed on the ground. He reportedly said he did it because he loved his wife and children and he loves Bogue Chitto.
He talked about killing the deputy where he said, “My pain wasn’t designed for him. He was just there. We was talking about me trying to take the children home … somebody called the officer … that’s what they do, they intervene. It cost him his life. I’m sorry.”
When asked what was next for him, Godbolt responded, “Death … Suicide by cop was my intention. I ain’t fit to live. Not after what I’ve done.”
Governor Phil Bryant released a statement and said, “Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities. Too often, we lose one of our finest. I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work.”
