Chris Paul has stirred up a bit of controversy after remarks he made about a rookie female referee. Find out what he said and decide for yourself whether he made a sexist comment or not inside….

Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul is currently in the midst of a firestorm of criticism after a comment he made following Thursday night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs defeated the Clippers (105-91), but Chris was more upset over the technical fouls he (and his team) received during the game. The Clippers received five technical fouls overall, three of them being called in a one-minute span.

After the game, CP3 spoke with reporters and did something we rarely see in the NBA: He criticized first-year referee Lauren Holtkamp. NBA ballers normally steer clear of speaking negatively about referees being that it can result in healthy fines. Last year, Indiana Pacers All-Star Paul George was fined $25,000 for public comments he made about NBA officials.

But, Chris just didn’t care. He said,

“The tech I got was ridiculous. That’s terrible. There’s no way that can be a technical. We try to get the ball out fast every time down the court. When we did that, she said, ‘Uh-uh.’ I said, ‘Why uh-uh?’ and she gave me a technical. That’s ridiculous. If that’s the case, this might not be for her.”

The Clippers baller is catching heat for the comment “This might not be for her”, which some are saying was sexist. Others believe it was just his wording and he was saying this about a rookie ref in general.

Following his interview, the NBA Referees Association spoke out about his comments. And they’re backing the rookie’s calls saying she was justified and “she belongs”. They tweeted:

After review, the calls made by Ms. Holtkamp are fully justified. We deplore the unprofessional comments made by Chris Paul. #shebelongs

ESPN “First Take” sports announcers Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless weigh-in on the situation tweeting:

This thing with @CP3 has just gotten ridiculous. Since few want to say so, I guess I will. Tune into the Stephen A. Smith Show @ top of hour

CP3 deserved tech. Ref handled in-bounds play correctly, on time. He was frustrated (down 23 on TNT), can be hotheaded. Said something. T.

CP3 shouldn’t have publicly questioned whether a rookie ref (of any gender) belongs in the NBA. Knows better. Must be fined significantly.

Hmm…maybe Chris should take a few pointers from Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. Ha!

So…about Chris Paul’s comments. Was he being unintentionally sexist, or were his comments taken out of context?

SPEAK ON IT!
