The scruffy homeless man transformed into a sleek and stylish hipster has been dubbed the ‘George Clooney’ of his home town as he tells how the makeover changed his life.
Jose Antonio, 57, had been living rough on the streets of Majorca for 25 years before a local hair stylist dyed his hair and trimmed his straggly beard, giving him a new lease on life.
A video of his transformation was made 18 months ago but only released online this week and has since gone viral.
Jose Antonio, known as Josete, is now sporting his natural grey colour, cut in a close crop which has seen him regularly compared to the Hollywood A-lister actor.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Josete said he now had a place to live, new clothes and undergone medical treatment on his eyes, ears and feet.
‘I doubt any of these changes would have happened if it wasn’t for the help of people like the hair salon owner and other locals who have assisted me to get back on my feet.
‘I’ll be eternally grateful to them.’

Transformation: Jose Antonio has been dubbed the ‘George Clooney’ of his home town after the scruffy homeless man was transformed into a sleek and stylish hipster. Today he was looking healthy and tanned in matching denim trousers and top
Coiffured: A Majorcan hair stylist transformed Josete into a trendy heart throb 18 months ago and released a video of the makeover to celebrate the salon’s third birthday this week
Bedraggled: The 55-year-old had been living rough on the streets of Majorca for 25 years before a local hair stylist dyed his hair and trimmed his straggly beard
Unbelievable: Josete said after a ‘succession of bad luck’ spread over nearly three decades, he hopes the new look will help him finally find a job – and a woman. He was overcome with emotion after seeing his new look in the mirror
Life-changer: He walked into the salon with grey unkempt hair and a straggly beard, matted and dirty from his 25 years on the streets, and came out looking more like a handsome movie star.
After a ‘succession of bad luck’ spread over nearly three decades, he now hopes the new look will help him finally find a job – and a woman.
‘It’s not just a change of looks,’ said Josete. ‘It’s changed my life.’
The video footage, showing the move from ‘gorilla-like’ vagrant to handsome man-about-town has earned him thousands of admirers.
He broke into tears after seeing the end result of his make over, courtesy of a barber who saw him working as an unlicensed parking attendant.
Basing himself in a square in the town of Palma, he helped people find parking spaces and watched their cars in order to scrape together enough money to survive.
A well known local, he was often seen perched on stone steps in the square.
‘Parking cars and being like that does not make anyone happy,’ he said.
The former electrician, who grew up on the holiday island of Gran Canaria, said his change of look had enabled him to rent a room in a house.
And he said his rediscovered interest in his appearance and well-being had led him to seek help for medical problems, including treatment for cataracts and problems with his hearing and his feet.
He is now hoping to seek proper work after he gets back to full health, although for the moment he continues to park cars in the same square in the Majorcan capital Palma and uses the money he makes to pay for the rent on his room.
Assured: Footage of his transformation from ‘gorilla-like’ vagrant to handsome man-about-town went viral, earning Jose thousands of admirers
New start: ‘It’s not just a change of looks,’ said Jose, who is again sporting his naturally grey hair. ‘It’s changed my life’
Local: Jose was a regular sight at the town square in Majorca. ‘Parking cars and being like that does not make anyone happy,’ he told Spanish TV Telecinco. ‘I had a succession of bad luck’
Unrecognisable: The change was so great a local bar owner served him a beer on a terrace at the square in Majorca where he spends his days helping car drivers find spaces and looking after their vehicles while they’re gone, without realising it was him
Compliments: He received numerous admiring glances and comments after the transformation, and the video has been a hit
As he was: Jose Antonio, who has been homeless for 25 years, walked into the salon with grey unkempt hair and a straggly dirty beard and came out with a very contemporary look
Josete said: ‘With the depression, I’d basically lost interest in life and the way I looked and had health problems I wasn’t dealing with.
‘The new look has helped me deal with the way I feel inside. It’s had so many practical consequences.
‘There was no way I could have found accommodation before. I would have been turned away. I’m now living in a room in a shared house which costs me around £175 with the electricity included.
‘I was living in an abandoned house when that video was shot which was brought down by recent floods.
‘I had no access there to running water or cooking facilities. Now I can get a shower whenever I want and a good night’s sleep.
‘That and the help I’ve received from locals has led me to start dealing with my health problems.’
Josete said he was ‘virtually blind’ when the video was taken but now after two operations can see ‘perfectly’.
He has also received treatment for an ear infection and calluse-like sores on his feet caused by a lack of vitamins.
Support: The former electrician, who ended up homeless after suffering depression, is currently being supported by an anonymous benefactor but wants a job
Gratitude: Jose Antonio is hugely grateful for the second chance he has been given but wants to be able to shine beyond his ‘good looks’
‘Once I’ve got my health problems fixed, I’ll be looking for a proper job. I can make about £17.50 on a good day but it’s obviously not what I really want to be doing if there’s something else available.
‘I don’t have a particular preference. I can guarantee I’ll give 110 per cent whatever I end up doing.’
Josete said he had never had problems with drink or drugs, and it was depression that caused his downfall.
He said: ‘I’d ended up like a vegetable, not worrying about what I ate or how I looked’
The beard has gone since his remarkable transformation into a hipster and he is currently sporting a clean-shaven look with short grey hair.
Today he was carrying a stylish man-bag and looking healthy and tanned in matching denim trousers and top.
He said: ‘I’m confident I’ll never go back to the way I look. I like the way I am now. I feel it’s me.’
It was made by film producer Dr Filmgood and posted on hair salon La Salvajeria’s Facebook page to coincide with the salon’s third birthday.
Hold still: the 55-year-old had attention lavished upon him as his hair was washed, cut, dyed, sprayed and blow dried. He received numerous admiring glances after the transformation, and the video has been a hit
Salon: His hair and beard were trimmed, and he was virtually unrecognisable by the time his treatment was finished
Surprise: He did not see the transformation until the very end of the process when he had been transformed into a stylish man-about-town at the salon
Preened: With eye brows plucked, beard washed and hair coiffured, Jose Antonio’s makeover video quickly went viral online
Josete is shown sitting at a chair in front of a mirror before his makeover, telling the cameraman: ‘Leave the doors over the mirror open for the moment so I can see myself for the last time like this.
‘Then close them to see if when they open again, it’s as if something else really opened up in my life, like a symbol.’
His emotions got the better of him when he was shown the result, tears flowing down his cheeks as he gasps: ‘F***, My God, this is incredible, is this me? I’m so different, no-one’s going to recognise me unless I tell them who I am.’
The cameras followed him as he donned a pair of designer shades and stepped out onto the streets of the neighbourhood dressed in an immaculate white shirt and red drainpipe trousers.
A couple of women stopped to compliment him on his looks as other locals let in on the secret of who he was showed their astonishment.
The change was so great a local bar owner served him a beer on a terrace at the square in Majorca where he spends his days without realising it was him.
One local couldn’t resist asking him: ‘Where’s your Ferrari, mate?’
My Godd: Jose Antonio burst into tears when he saw the change and did not recognise himself when he saw the dyed hair
Hipster: One local said of the video: ‘He’s a wonderful person and the video is amazing’
Salva Garcia, the owner of hair salon La Salvajeria where Jose Antonio’s transformation took place, said: ‘I had been telling Josete for a while that I could do his hair and beard for him and one day he said ‘yes.’
‘I’m really pleased at the way things are going for him. He’s a fantastic guy.
‘The physical transformation has definitely led to a change to many things in his life.’
