Shonda Rhimes has taken the website DEADLINE to task for an eyebrow-raising article about the rise in “ethnic castings”. See her tweets and responses inside and read about Evelyn Lozada’s new OWN series.

Shonda Rhimes is fired up again. Ya’ll know Shonda has no problems using her Twitter account to spray and slay. The industry site DEADLINE (and writer Nellie Andreeva) just got the business.

Nellie wrote a piece called “Pilots 2015: The Year Of Ethnic Castings – About Time Or Too Much Of Good Thing?” which basically asks….are there too many “colored” folks on TV. She didn’t use that word but the “sentiment” was ALL there.

So…..Deadline talked about the rise in racially diverse television (Empire, Blackish, Fresh Off The Boat) and quoted an agent who said they can now “pitch any actor for any role, and I think that’s good.” That’s all great and fine.

Then came the shade. Here’s another quote: “Instead of opening the field for actors of any race to compete for any role in a color-blind manner, there has been a significant number of parts designated as ethnic this year, making them off-limits for Caucasian actors.”

The article also states that the parts written as white are being changed to a different race if a talented, high-caliber ethnic actor shows interest. Their point?!

We have our own thoughts, but let’s see what the Queen of ABC’s Thursday night had to say:

Then Ms. Rhimes retweeted several comments that fall in line with her thoughts (and ours):

NEWFLASH Nellie: White actors will be ok.

Coming in July….

Former “BBW” starlet Evelyn Lozada, who was also the first celeb to open up on “Iyanla: Fix My Life”, is returning to OWN in a new family-based docu-series. The show has the working title “Evelyn” and will feature her entire family, including fiance Carl Crawford (LA Dodgers), daughter Shaniece and the littlest one Carl Leo Jr. Here’s the synopsis:

“Evelyn” (working title) follows the lives of Evelyn Lozada, of “Basketball Wives” fame, and her 21-year-old daughter Shaniece. Evelyn is engaged to big league baseball player Carl Crawford and the couple just welcomed their first child, Carl Leo Jr., to the family last March. Between learning to be a mom all over again, setting up a new home in Los Angeles for her and her family, running several businesses as well as dealing with issues surrounding her family back East… Evelyn has a lot going on!

Not to be outdone, her daughter Shaniece’s modeling career is taking off resulting in a flood of business opportunities with no clear choice of which to pursue, leaning on her mom for advice which she (sometimes) takes. Each episode is filled with close friends and relatives in the ladies’ lives who help round out a world filled with laughter, support, encouragement and tears as we follow Shaniece carving out the new life before her and Evelyn finally feeling like she has the life she deserves. The series is produced by Shed Media with Pam Healey, John Hesling, Lisa Shannon, Russ Heldt and Evelyn Lozada as executive producers.”

Apparently, Oprah signed off on this. So let’s hope Evelyn has the personality to carry a 30-min show. She won’t be able to fall back on cursing, weave-pulling or leaping on tables to keep fans interested. FYI – OWN renewed “Deion’s Family Playbook”, “Flex & Shanice” and “Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s” for its 2015 primetime lineup.

SUPER SIDEBAR:

Remember Jay Williams…the dude who fathered 34 kids. OWN gave him a show too. SIGH…..

Billed as an “Iyanla” spinoff, the show follows Jay as he works to put his life and relationships in order. It’s slated to premiere in September 2015. So……who gets a check? Jay? All the babies’ mommas? The kids? And will there be any more procreation?
