Comedian Samantha Bee is set to steal some of Donald Trump’s spotlight.
Bee, who hosts Full Frontal on TBS, will be the star of an alternative event on the night of Trump’s first White House Correspondents’ Dinner – the customary event where journalists gather with celebrities and politicians at Washington’s Hilton Hotel.
The night usually features an opening performance by a comedian who ‘roasts’ the famous faces in attendance, as well as the president, before the commander-in-chief takes the microphone and fires back with some one-liners of their own.
However, Bee and her team aren’t waiting to find out if they’ll be invited this year, with her event to be held on the same night – April 29.

The 47-year-old comedian told the New York Times the idea for her gala, which is being called ‘Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner’, was hatched among her staff during a discussion about whether Trump would even continue with the tradition.
‘We were talking out loud about whether we thought the White House Correspondents’ dinner would change during a Trump presidency, or if it would even exist,’ she told the Times.
‘Then we thought, why don’t we just do one, just to do it in the way that we would want it done if we were hosting it?’
Bee went on to tell the Times the plan was to have a host of comedians appear at the event, but despite that, she wasn’t trying to replace the traditional dinner.
Bee said the idea was dreamed up by her and her team during a discussion about whether the correspondents’ dinner would exist under a Trump presidency
‘We’re not trying to supersede it, we just want to be there in case something happens – or doesn’t happen – and ensure that we get to properly roast the president,’ she told the newspaper.
In reference to just which guests would appear, Bee said: ‘We have binders full of people, but we don’t have any specifics to offer yet.’
However, she did confirm to the newspaper that all money raised by the dinner will go to the Committee to Protect Journalists. The Times reports the special will air on TBS.
This year will be the first in which Trump is at the helm during the correspondents’ dinner, but he has been in the headlines after the event in the past.
In 2011, Trump was viciously roasted by Barack Obama – with the President mocking the then-reality television host over his campaign to push the ‘birther’ movement.
‘Now, I know that he’s taken some flak lately but no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than the Donald,’ Obama joked.

‘And that’s because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like, did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are Biggie and Tupac?
‘All kidding aside, we all know about your credentials, and your breadth of experience. For example, on a recent episode of The Apprentice, at the steakhouse, the men’s cooking team did not impress the men from Omaha Steaks.
‘There was lots of blame to go around, but you, Mr. Trump, recognized that the real problem was a lack of leadership. Ultimately, you didn’t blame Lil Jon or Meatloaf, you fired Gary Busey.
‘These are the kinds of decisions that keep me up at night. Well handled, sir!’
Bee has also been a vocal critic of Trump and his supporters throughout the campaign.
Just two days after the election, she made headlines by attacking the people who voted for Trump.

After the election, Bee took aim at white people who voted for Trump in the election. She is pictured on January 14 at a TCA event in California
‘In the coming days, people will be looking for someone to blame: the pollsters, the strident feminists, the Democratic party, a vengeful god. But once you dust for fingerprints, it’s pretty clear who ruined America – white people,’ Bee said.
‘The Caucasian nation showed up in droves to vote for Trump. So I don’t want to hear a goddamn word about black voter turnout. How many times do we expect black people to build our country for us?’
She continued: ‘White people, this is the worst thing we’ve ever – no, I’m sorry, that’s a very high bar. But holy s***! And don’t try to distance yourself from the bad apples and say, “It’s not my fault, I didn’t vote for him. Hashtag not all white people.” Shush.
‘If Muslims have to take responsibility for every member of their community, so do we.’
Bee also took aim at white women, who polls show supported Trump over Clinton on Tuesday.
‘White women, faced with the historic choice between the first female president and a vial of weaponized testosterone said, “I’ll take option B. I just don’t like her,”‘ said Bee.
She then added: ‘Hope you got your sticker, ladies. Way to lean out.’
