With President Trump in office and the House currently being GOP-led, the repeals are coming in for gun laws. The Social Security gun ban has already been repealed and so has the lead ammunition ban imposed by the Obama administration. Now, serious attention is being turned to repeal the gun ban for U.S. military veterans.

Under the Social Security ban, the Social Security Administration (SSA) could examine beneficiaries who were under mental duress and needed assistance managing their finances. If a beneficiary fell under these categories, the VA could proclaim the beneficiary incompetent and be turned over to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and banned from making firearm purchases. Many see the Social Security gun ban for military veterans as a way to use far reaching language and too broad of the term “mental health” as a way of denying Second Amendment rights to those who served our country.

Military veterans turned over to the NICS are “subject to a lifetime ban on the acquisition and possession of firearms, unless he or she successfully petitions for ‘relief from disabilities,’” says the NRA-ILA. The House Committee on Veteran Affairs chairman Phil Roe’s (R-TN-1) Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act has already passed in committee and will be taken up by the full house as early as this week.
