This week, Anika Minor will step onto the runway on West 43rd Street in New York City and fulfill a dream a year in the making.
“Last year I said, ‘I will be at NYFW 2019’ and look how God worked it out,” Minor said.
The 26-year-old former Decatur resident now living in Huntsville will model Saturday in New York Fashion Week — one of the world’s premier fashion events along with Paris, Milan and London. New York Fashion Week, which kicks off Friday and runs to Feb. 16, will feature dozens of international designers.
Minor will walk in the Takeover, a show focused on inclusivity and diversity that will feature pieces by 12 designers. This marks Minor’s first modeling opportunity at one of the “Big Four” fashion weeks.
As she prepared for her New York trip — practicing her poses and walk — Minor talked about her introduction to fashion, her invitation to fashion week and her dreams of the future.
When did you get interested in modeling? I’ve always said I wanted to model. I started about three years ago when I was asked to be a hair model for an event at the Von Braun Center. Shows I’ve done have been in Huntsville, and my last one was in Atlanta. I walked in the On the Fly Fashion Show, which showcased young designers in Atlanta.
How has being in the fashion industry impacted you? It has really changed my attitude tremendously. People are actually hitting me up on Instagram telling me they love my look and would love me to come to their city to walk. There have been many challenges because I have to travel to do what I love and people here want to compete and not really come together, but I have found many model friends all over the world.
How did you land the show at New York Fashion Week? Networking. I was added to this fashion model networking group and it was an online model call. I submitted and actually got a call back.
With the show less than a week away, what are you feeling? I’m nervous as all get out. I’ve been downstairs practicing every chance I get . This is really a big deal and I’m so blessed to have this going on.
What are your goals for the future? My goal is to get my modeling off the ground along with finishing school for criminal justice. I want to be the first black supermodel/homicide detective.
