A 24-year-old man died early Saturday after he jumped into the Chicago River near Wabash Avenue, according to fire and police officials. 

About 2:05 a.m., the 24-year-old man jumped into the river, prompting a diver from the Police Department’s marine unit to go into the water. By 2:30 a.m., the man had been rescued, according to the Chicago Fire Department. 

He had been taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was later pronounced dead, police said. 

The water at the time of the incident was about 63 degrees, the fire department said.
