First Lady Michelle Obama will return to her hometown to attend Saturday’s funeral for Hadiya Pendleton, a White House official said.  Mrs. Obama will be joined by White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

The 15-year-old drum majorette was shot to death not far from President Barack Obama’s house soon after she performed at his inauguration festivities.

Pendleton’s death drew global attention to Chicago’s homicide and violence problem as local, state and federal officials push for stronger gun legislation in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., massacre.

Saturday’s funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Greater Harvest Baptist Church, 5141 S. State, in Chicago.  A viewing is scheduled for Friday at Callahan Funeral Home, 7030 S. Halsted St., from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
