Peep the interview highlights below:
On how she has grown as an artist and an individual since her debut in the music industry:
I have a lot more knowledge. I’m definitely older (laughs). I think that the knowledge part and the older kinda work hand and hand. On top of that though, I do believe that I’ve developed some wisdom…One thing that I say a lot is that there is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge you can get from a book, wisdom comes over time…Knowing how to pick and choose my battles. This is a rough industry to navigate, but I love what I do and it’s what I want to do for the rest of my life in some capacity…The wisdom portion of it is probably the greatest change in me. That’ll be the thing that’ll help me to be able to continue to maintain a career being on the stage, television production or writing for other people or all of the above!
On celebrities she’d like to work with:
There is a young artist by the name of Bridget Kelly who I met at Essence this year and she’s just as sweet as can be. She has a wonderful voice, I would love to work with her. I absolutely would love to work with Candice Glover, who just won American Idol, I think she’s extremely talented and she represents so much of what the industry for so long has said is not talentable in terms of what an artist is, but to me she’s the ultimate artist…
On what inspired you to do R&B Divas LA:
…I actually was in the original layout for the show that was being shopped to networks. I really decided at that time that Reality TV wasn’t something I wanted to do. My favorite reality TV show was ‘Runs House’ and I loved it because it looked more like the ‘Cosby Show’ to me than reality TV. Things that have come after it was not something that I can say I was proud of or wanted to be a part of in anyway…Ultimately when I did say yes it was after the first season of R&B Divas Atlanta, watching the show even though there was no conflict to me I looked at it and said that it was a pretty good representation of the artists there in Atlanta and it was better than much of what I had seen…
On new music:
I have a single that will be here late this year and an album at the top of this year. I’m excited to do music again because I have something to say. I’ve always talked about something, but again, age, maturity, knowledge and wisdom gives me another way to present it…
