Kanye West was the MAN of the hour. The rapper/fashionisto was honored with the “Shoe of the Year” award at the Footwear News Achievement Awards held at the IAU Building for his highly coveted Yeezy Boost sneakers.
Although the shoe was damn near impossible to get (selling out just seconds after the release), sneaker heads felt the Yeezy x adidas collection was the hottest shoe in the game this year. And, let’s face it, just about every YBF celeb has a pair.
The multi-Grammy Award winning artist is finally getting the recognition he feels he deserves (and has been throwing tantrums about since he started his fashion takeover), so he was sporting a smile on his face the entire night. That’s something we hardly get to see from the “Bound to West” rapper:
We love a happy ‘Ye.
After being presented with the prestigious award, the YEEZUS rapper delivered a profanity ridden acceptance speech. And he warned those in the audience, if they had a problem with it, they could leave. He began his speech saying, “I have absolutely no plans for what I’m going to say, so this could land completely wrong, but it doesn’t really f*cking matter, does it? If you don’t like 10-minute profanity-ridden speeches that end with a presidential bid, you can go to the bathroom.”
He then went on to explain how the Taylor Swift fiasco inspired his creative process:
“After the infamous Taylor Swift moment I did a sort of self exile just to get away from paparazzi and have people not, you know, just fucking with me, really. And the first thing I did was I went to Japan and it was me and Virgil Abloh, who has the brand Off White, and we just sat on a computer every day with this idea of designing. We designed on the computer so much we started to joke, ‘hey, did you wash my jpg?’”
The 38-year-old rapper then talked about how adidas was the first company to believe in him and how they gave him the power to do what he wanted:
“I want to f*cking draw shoes, and it doesn’t matter if someone thinks that I’m supposed to be doing something that’s more important. [Adidas] gave me the opportunity, especially this first run, to make ’em however I want to make ’em. They didn’t say, “You got to make the logo four times bigger than the shoe.’”
The soon-to-be father-of-two also talked about he just wants to bring joy in other people’s lives the way his daughter North West lights up his life. He said,
“I want to bring joy. Just like when my daughter is singing and jumping around — she might not be finishing her sentences perfectly, but she’s bringing so much joy. And I know that she’s going to grow up and be amazing.”
He also dropped a few gems encouraging people to dream big and to not let anyone get in their way of accomplishing their goals. He said:
“As a creator, it doesn’t matter how big your house is, how big your name is, how much money you have, your job is to create while you’re here and if anyone is in the way of that, if anything gets in the way of that, you got to burn it to the f*cking ground.”
Legendary boxer Suagr Ray Leonard was also in attendance where he was tapped to present.
