Soul Singer, Mary J. Blige and Burger King distributed a new commercial promoting their new chicken wrap. In the jingle, Mary J. recites the lyrics:
“Crispy chicken, fresh lettuce, three cheeses, ranch dressing, wrapped up in a tasty flour tortilla”
This has provoked major outrage amongst the African American community who have claimed it is deeply offensive to have a black person singing about fried chicken in such a stereotypical African-American demeanor. Fans expressed their embarrassment for the singer and given that Mary is seen as a true embodiment of the African American woman that has struggled and become the successor, this was definetely a career low, even for her.
Burger King has since pulled the commercial from Youtube and all TV slots. And Mary has found herself exercising damage control with the following statement:
“I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence, and unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip. I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out”.
Gumbumper…. Bump gums and tell US what you think about this?
