For some reason, every time I see a Donald Trump story, I say to myself, “this is going to be a long four years.” This is one of those stories.
Many of us were shocked to see Preet Bharara tweet that he was fired!
“I did not resign. Moments ago I was fired,” the tweet reads. “Being the US Attorney in SDNY will forever be the greatest honor of my professional life.”
We hear that prior to the tweet, Preet refused to hand over a resignation letter, as requested by the Trump administration.
According to CNN, Preet received a call from acting Deputy Attorney General Dana Boente; who asked Preet to confirm his refusal, at which time Preet confirmed. Not too long after, Dana reportedly called him back and told him Trump was giving him the boot.
What’s weird is that back in November, Trump told Preet that he could keep his position–and now this.
Sen. Chuck Schumer shed some light on some very important details:
“While it’s true that presidents from both parties made their own choices for U.S. attorney positions across the country, they have always done so in an orderly fashion that doesn’t put ongoing investigations at risk. They ask for letters of resignation, but the attorneys are allowed to stay on the job until their successor is confirmed.”
Basically, “The President is interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice,” as Chuck put it.
