The next installment of the Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant, just added another cool piece of backstory to the film series, this time focusing on Walter, the humanoid robot played by Michael Fassbender, with a little help from AMD, the processor company.
In a short clip posted on YouTube, we see the “birth” of Walter as his parts are assembled (a la Westworld’s opener) and his processor chips are implanted. Oh, what’s that? Yeah, it’s sort of a commercial for AMD, too. Thankfully, AMD’s involvement turns out to add a bit of cool faux-authenticity rather than mere product shilling. At the end of the clip, we’re prompted to visit a special “Meet Walter” site where you can (in your imagination) order your own Walter.
According to the site, Walter offers (made-up) features such as Biometric Regulation, Emotional Intelligence (“Engineering Intuition by Radeon Instinct”), Cognitive Processing and Biosocial Compatibility (“Equipped with AMD’s Ryzen™ and Radeon™ Instinct technology”). No, AMD doesn’t power human-deceiving androids just yet, but the promo site is pretty entertaining in a “this is how processor companies will promote the robot apocalypse in coming decades” sort of way.
