In a new interview….
“Scandal” starlet Kerry Washington sat down with Yahoo’s Style Sessions to chop it up about her ground breaking role in the hit ABC series.Olivia Pope’s character is one of the pioneering roles that has helped changed the game as far as black women being portrayed in powerful roles on television.
When talking about Olivia’s significance, the 38-year-old actress said he hopes to see Olivia be considered as a powerful human being and NOT just a powerful woman of color. She said,
“That’s not something that’s happened in almost 40 years. In my lifetime, it hadn’t happened!” Washington says, reflecting on the advancement that her character represents in the entertainment industry. She goes on, with conviction: “I love that it isn’t a part of the conversation anymore. We’re not really talking about how it’s rare to see a black woman on television anymore, because it’s all over the place. Olivia Pope is surrounded by powerful, strong, amazing women on television and so maybe she can stop being a woman of color and be a human being.”
While we understand what Kerry is trying to say, why can’t Olivia be both? What are your thoughts?
