Two Chinese J-10 fighter jets flew within 200 yards of a U.S. Navy P-3 surveillance plane near Hong Kong on Thursday, a U.S. official told Reuters.
The official said the Chinese fighter jets flew within 200 yards of a U.S. P-3 surveillance plane just 150 miles southeast of Hong Kong in international air space. The Chinese fighter jet flew in an “unsafe” manner, the official said, adding that the aircraft flew in front of the American plane conducting a series of slow turns.
The USS Dewey sailed within 12 miles of Mischief Reef, an artificial island built up by China in the South China Sea, on Wednesday.
Earlier in May, a Chinese jet conducted an inverted intercept above a U.S. Air Force WC-135.
