The Alabama Senate has just passed a near-total abortion ban in a 25 to 6 vote.

According to CBS News, the legislation—House Bill 314, “Human Life Protection Act,” will ban all abortion in the state of Alabama unless “abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk to the woman.” The legislation provides no exception for rape or incest.

The bill reclassifies abortion as a Class A felony and criminalizes the procedure. Doctors who perform the procedure can receive up to 99 years in prison.

According to CNN, Governor Kay Ivey will have up to six days to sign the legislation. However, the bill would not become effective until six months if it becomes the law.

Many people have expressed their disappointment in the Senate’s decision, including Bernie Sanders who said, “What Alabama is doing is unconstitutional and disrespects the fundamental right a woman has to make decisions to her body. I say to Gov. Ivey to veto this cruel bill. Stop the attack on women’s rights.”

As we previously reported, Georgia’s governor signed into law the fetal “Heartbeat Bill,” which prevents abortions after a heartbeat is detected in an embryo.

Abortion rights advocates have already said they are ready to challenge the legislation if Governor Ivey signs the bill into law.

Roommates, what are your thoughts?
